TikTok surpassed Google in the Internet traffic list, becoming the most popular domain name in the world

According to Cloudflare data, TikTok (TikTok Overseas Edition) became the most popular domain name in terms of Internet traffic at the end of 2021.

As the world enters the second year of the epidemic, more and more people use the Internet to meet their service, information, and entertainment needs. The one that has benefited most from the surge in Internet traffic seems to be TikTok, which surpassed all major technology companies in the United States in the second half of 2021 to become the most popular domain name.

Network performance tracking company Cloudflare found that the global Internet traffic of the social media giant under the Chinese Bytedance company jumped from seventh last year to first, and Google has occupied this position until early 2021.

At present, Google ranks second in Cloudflare’s list of the top ten domain names at the end of 2021, closely followed by the websites of large technology companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon.

Cloudflare said that TikTok led the way for a few days from March, and then maintained the number one position for most days after August, including Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Netflix, YouTube, Twitter and WhatsApp occupy the remaining four positions on the Internet traffic list, while Instagram (ranked ninth at the end of last year) was replaced by WhatsApp. In terms of the most popular chat domain names, WhatsApp leads, followed by WeChat, Signal and Telegram.

Netflix still maintains the status of the world’s most visited streaming media site, sometimes even more than Amazon and Apple. Cloudflare found that the number of page views on the platform peaked on weekends and during the holiday weeks of Christmas and New Year.

YouTube, the second-most-traffic streaming website, briefly became the world’s most visited website on February 2. Cloudflare attributed this phenomenon to several possible reasons. For example, a fitness trainer in Myanmar filming a video of herself exercising during a coup d’état behind her must have played a role.

Also in the field of streaming media, in the second half of this year, Disney+’s ranking rose from eighth to seventh, surpassing Sling, and behind Roku, HBO Max, Hulu and Peacock.

Although TikTok is clearly the most visited social media domain name, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram are closely followed in the top five. The rankings of Snapchat, Reddit, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Quora remain unchanged.

E-commerce is dominated by Amazon, with Alibaba’s online shopping platform Taobao in second place. The new company entering the top five in the second half of 2021 is another Chinese e-commerce sector, JD.com, which beat Shopify (currently ranked sixth). US retail giants eBay and Wal-Mart rank third and fourth respectively.

Among all space-related fields, NASA is the most visited domain name in the second half of this year, followed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin. Thanks to Richard Branson’s space flight, Virgin Galactic’s passenger traffic in July has been increased.

In the list of meta-universe domains that Cloudflare calls, “Roblox” defeated Epic games’ “Fortnite” to occupy the top spot, while “Second Life” ranked third. It is not yet known how often Meta will be on this list.
