ON Semiconductor’s 16-megapixel XGS sensor brings high-quality, low-power imaging to factory automation and intelligent transportation systems (ITS)

July 28, 2021-ON semiconductor (ON semiconductor, NASDAQ: ON) launched the latest product of the XGS series of CMOS image sensors. XGS 16000 is a 16-megapixel sensor that provides high-quality global shutter imaging for factory automation applications such as robots and inspection systems. XGS 16000 provides excellent performance with low power consumption, and consumes only 1 W at 65 frames per second (fps), making XGS 16000 one of the best products in its class in terms of power consumption, and it is also the standard 29 mm x The 29 mm industrial camera provides extremely high resolution.

XGS 16000 has the same general architecture and footprint as other XGS CMOS image sensors. This allows manufacturers to use a single camera design to develop products with different resolutions. The sensor supports an output of up to 65 frames per second (fps) at full resolution, and is available in various speed grade versions, all with Bayer color or black and white options.

Camera system developers for intelligent transportation systems, machine vision inspection and industrial automation applications will benefit from the high resolution and high frame rate of XGS 16000. ON Semiconductor’s global shutter pixel technology solves the limitations of rolling shutter pixels in these applications. Using the global shutter method can avoid artifacts such as motion blur and distortion. This is increasingly important for automation, detection and identification applications.

Toshiba Teli focuses on the development and manufacturing of high-performance cameras to meet the application-specific requirements of key market segments including machine vision, medical imaging, and security. It has integrated XGS 16000 into its new 16-megapixel industrial camera middle. DDU1607MG/MC uses a unique dual USB3 interface technology, which can provide 16 million pixels of black and white and color resolution at a frame rate exceeding 47 fps.

XGS 16000 is designed with a unique 1:1 square aspect ratio, which helps maximize the image capture area within the camera lens aperture and ensure the best light sensitivity. This design makes the sensor compatible with the 29 mm2 industry standard camera format using commercially available C-Mount lenses, making full use of the available field of view and sensor area under the physical size of the camera.

To simplify the design of new cameras, ON Semiconductor offers color and black and white versions of the XGS 16000 X-Cube and X-Celerator developer kits. The reference design kit comes with examples of high-speed conversion to MIPI interfaces for faster integration into standard FPGA evaluation environments.
