A survey of smartphone consumer usage shows that as more people work from home and share information on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of speaker mode has increased by 40%

Austin, Texas, USA, March 26, 2021: According to a global survey commissioned by Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS) by SAR Insight & Consulting, consumers are increasingly using smartphones The speakers watch and share videos on social media, make video calls, and listen to podcasts or music while doing multiple tasks. Respondents said that in the past 12 months, the main reasons for the increasing use of speaker mode are the need for convenience, multitasking or listening to music, podcasts, audiobooks, and creating a good atmosphere. This in turn drives consumers’ desire to improve the audio performance of mobile devices and may affect their future purchase decisions.

The survey conducted in five countries: China, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea asked participants how they use mobile phones, when to use speaker mode, and the role of audio performance in today’s applications that rely heavily on video and audio. The survey results from 1,722 respondents aged 18 to 65 years old showed that in the past year, 40% of respondents increased the use of speaker mode when enjoying audio content. And young people are driving this growth across the board, especially in China. In China, 46% of respondents said they have increased their use of smartphone speakers.

Peter Cooney, founder and research director of SAR Insight, said: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people work from home, and the use of smartphone speaker mode for multitasking or contact with family and friends has also increased. The pandemic has led to the emergence of different usage scenarios. Especially young people aged 18 to 34 who rely more on smartphone apps that require better audio. We expect this situation to continue in the post-epidemic era.”

Although consumers still use mobile phones to make calls, wider applications such as listening to music, podcasts and audiobooks, watching movies or sharing video content and playing games are equally important to their daily lives. Consumers use the speaker mode to send and receive voice messages, and young people (18-34 years old) use speakers to play games, watch videos or share content. 34% of respondents said that they use the speaker mode only to create a good atmosphere. Among the respondents in the United States and Germany, 53% and 57% respectively stated that convenience is the primary reason for using speaker mode in video and teleconferences.

China leads the world in the use of mobile devices. 78% of people like to share social media videos and content in speaker mode, and more than half said they use speaker mode to create a good atmosphere, especially in gaming. South Korea is a close second, 67% of people prefer to use the speaker mode to share social content with friends and family, and almost half of them prefer to do other things while talking on the phone.

The impact of audio quality on purchasing decisions is increasing day by day

Globally, interviewees agree that the importance of audio in their mobile device purchase decision-making process is rising. In particular, Chinese respondents expressed their hope for better audio speakers. Among them, 72% said that audio has become more and more important in the process of deciding to buy a smartphone, and 62% of Chinese users said that they are concerned about existing smart phones. The sound of the phone speaker is satisfied.

Respondents also cited other reasons for using speaker mode on mobile phones, such as exercise, online learning, dance practice or karaoke, online research, or inability to hear each other in earpiece mode. Worrying about disturbing others, saving battery, or poor audio/speaker quality are the main considerations for not using speaker mode.
